Summer 2008
The 2008 harvest is shaping up to be quite the
challenge. Our teams at National are ready to meet that challenge
head on.
Mother Nature dealt a heavy blow to the Pacific Northwest this year. An unusually cool
spring followed by spells of extreme heat caused many challenges. Pea
season, already shortened by limited acreage, was the first to be
hit. It started nearly 2 weeks late in an unforgiving +100˚F heat wave. Refer to the pea report
for more specifics.
The cool spring has affected nearly all crops and most
will be 7-14 days behind their normal start dates. While peas were
hit hard by the spring weather, our later crops should not suffer as
much. Mother Nature provides no guarantees, however, and there is
still a real possibility she will wreak even more havoc on the coming
harvest.
More to come as situations change.
