Green Beans
The cool spring affected yet another crop: green
beans. The season start was delayed a little more than a week. The
cool spring also slowed the normal plant growth, so when warmer July
temperatures arrived they caused some areas of “bunching”
(when more acres are ready for harvesting than planned for under the
planting schedule).
Bunching can cause two possible problems: 1) some
fields may not be harvested at optimal times, if at all, and 2) with
so much product ready at the same time, average quality can
suffer. National has
experienced both during the first 2-3 weeks of the season. Still, yields are expected to be
average but have some potential quality issues. There is still some optimism with
it being so early in the season.
