Peas
As mentioned in the season overview, the 2008 Pea
Harvest has suffered considerably.
The crop was already hindered by a 15%+ drop in acres
available this year and the season could not afford any issues with
the crop itself. Unfortunately, this is exactly the scenario that
played out.
The spring planting season was dotted with
unseasonably cool temperatures and occasional snow coverings. Then,
during harvest, temperatures soared to +100˚F. Neither scenario
bodes well for pea yields.
These issues directly impacted the main harvest in Eastern Washington, which finished up in late
July. For the acres that could be harvested, yields were good but
quality suffered.
At this time it appears the final pea acres in Western Washington should wrap up by the 10th
of August. These areas were
less affected by weather issues and should yield a slightly
under-average crop with average quality.
Pea availability will be tight this upcoming year.
